Childhood friends or friendly childhood?

The very first live photograph that comes into my memory is a three year old baby girl drinking three full glasses of milk at a stretch and her two elder sisters gobbling up the apple pieces  given to her. The girl was almost choking with milk but was saved from eating apples. This was a completely mutually agreeable contract between me and my elder sisters who saved me from smelling or eating fruits which I could not stand, and as repayment I relieved them from drinking milk which they always tried to avoid. Few years later when my mother took over charges, she  peeled and boiled the apples and offered it with sugar and raisins so that it tasted like jam. Mothers are God indeed, right?

At the end of the milky way, soon after the exchange operation, the girl ran straightaway to a small room where all her friends used to wait for her. The lid of a soap case, a broken torch, a round part of a broken steel spoon, some thrown away hair combs, some spectacle cases and many such dustbin articles of the house were really very precious and close to me.

Tagore said,

( যা কিছু জীর্ণ আমার, দীর্ণ আমার, জীবনহারা

তাহারি স্তরে স্তরে পড়ুক ঝরে সুরের ধারা )

Subjects that are shattered,

Exhausted and lifeless

Let the stream of music be

Dripping through the layers.

So very true are these lines. But what attracted the little one towards those unwanted articles is still a mystery.

In that small room, my time binocular confirms that some proper toys were indeed there. However, they took some more time to be intimate. Initially I was very comfortable with the broken, thrown away and unnoticeable things. My job was to arrange them in some order, teach them how to be disciplined and stand straight in their own places. Then I started to count them. After counting was finished, I used to explore my architectural expertise. Piling up one over another according to their shapes and sizes I used to build up a monument like structure which gave me immense joy, as shapes were taking place out of shapeless and perhaps something constructive emerged from nothings

Moving forward by a few years, this little girl now takes shelter in her comfort zone soon after she returns from school. Meanwhile, her mother managed a bucket to keep her belongings and she managed to make friendships with her living buddies residing in that bucket.

Let’s start with Gilipootki, an inherited property from my sister. The child believed that Gilipootki was a poor girl with only one leg and one boot, the other leg being  a victim of a terrible accident – some thin pieces of sharp  uneven iron bars and a naked foot below. She had a head full of curly hair which formed a solid golden bump on her head with no shampoo for years. Even her eyes were  damaged; one round bright eye and another – a half closed one without the eye ball. I was so sad and  deeply concerned about how would Gilipootki manage her life in future. The girl might have been taught the very first lesson of empathy in own natural way that day. Much later, when I came to know that Gili was not a congenitally sick baby and it was my elder sister who had put her into this pathetic condition to satisfy her curiousness about human anatomy, my feeling towards Gili did not change at all. Finally hats off to the naming capacity of my father, as I could not find a single reason behind giving the doll a name like Gilipootki.

It would be a serious injustice to my childhood if I do not talk about Naku. This one was a clown doll with a triangular long hat and a longer nose. He had two trumpets fixed to his hands and started to play those immediately after getting energized by a spring key; just like our political stakeholders. I remember him so much because I did not find any of his nostrils and was super confused about the functionality of his gigantic nose in breathing activity. However, a vague idea of ear – nose connectivity gave me some relief that he might be managing inhalation exhalation process via ears. Needless to say my noble intention went into vain when I tried a surgery on his nose with safety pins; the material was so sturdy that I could not insert anything. Anyway, with God’s grace, Naku survived.

Some special funny toys were there who raised vital  and critical questions to that little one’s mind . For example, the ‘Surprise  Smiley Eggs’ – those eggs never lied on the floor. How many times  and how many ways were tried upon, they eventually got up and stand on the base with their ever  smiling faces. My helpful mind immediately got concerned for Humpty Dumpty. Just think if  Humpty Dumpty had had this feature they would not have faced that great fall and the world famous rhyme would not have been there? On the other hand, as I was very sympathetic about my friends of the bucket, I got worried that they might  have to study 24 * 7 before exams. The poor souls could never nag to their mom over feeling sleepy  and lying down on bed, can you imagine? Who knows,  maybe God has secretly injected this feature to the brain of  our ambitious Gen Y or Gen Z who never feel like taking a breath and rest for some time.

When the girl grew up a little, promoted to the primary section from the nursery section, she had a family of her own, with two kids, Dolu and Lalu. Now, the story of this trio is a history. If my readers are interested I will definitely share that some day.

Shall sign off  for now …will be going to sleep with my childhood buddies. I never have had close friends; I could not open up like others. But Someone somewhere arranged my small world in such an affectionate lovely way that my childhood itself became my best friend and it has remained so, even today. When life throws very difficult and troublesome questions, which I can never answer, I always go back to my last resort, my childhood, to find and get an answer, to have solace. The faith that everything can again be better- comes back.

Enjoy the week with the little one inside you.

Cheers!
